Neuromuscular Massage Techniques

By Deborah Freeman, RN, LMT

There are many wonderful styles and techniques of massage therapy available.  It is the job of a talented and skilled LMT to determine which technique would best meet your individual needs.

One style of massage that offers great relief from chronic tension is a form of deep tissue massage called Neuromuscular Technique (NMT).  NMT was developed by Stanley Lief, DO, DC, ND, and credit is given to Boris Chaitow, DO, DC, ND, for the techniques refinement as well as its role in modern day massage.

The neuro-muscular-skeletal (nerve, muscle and bone) changes that take place in our bodies represent a record of our attempt to adjust and adapt to the stressors placed upon it.  These stressors can be postural patterns or the traumatic insults we experience during our lifetime.  Combine these stresses with emotional or physical tension and our bodies respond by creating patterns of bunched, contracted and fatigued fibrous tissue.

One of the main objectives of NMT is to combat these chronic pain cycles by interrupting pain signals that run along neural pathways and correcting neuromuscular imbalances.  Unlike some forms of deep tissue massage, NMT consists of six very specific sequences, each with its own series of deep, deliberate strokes.  For optimum results, four NMT sessions, one each week over a four week period, are recommended.

Some of the benefits of NMT are increased blood circulation, improvement in muscle flexibility and joint mobility, relief of pain and release of tension.  It is also very helpful in treating clients with fibromyalgia and clients with acute or chronic pain symptoms.

Neuromuscular therapy is one of the many techniques Deb enjoys incorporating into her massage sessions.  To learn more about NMT, or to schedule an appointment with Deb, contact her at 603-490-1007, or at 603-432-7777 Ext 84.
